Islamabad : The insurgent group TTP attacked security forces in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province on Friday. Pakistan's state media PTV reported that seven Pakistani soldiers were killed in a suicide attack on a military camp in Mir Ali district of North Waziristan. Security officials said seven Pakistani soldiers were killed in the suicide attack near the Afghan border. Security forces claimed to have killed four attackers in the ensuing gunfight.
According to Dawn, an attacker carried out a suicide attack on security forces in Mir Ali. He rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the wall of the security forces camp. Taking advantage of the blast, three more attackers entered the camp and opened fire. This incident occurred during the fragile ceasefire between Islamabad and Kabul.
Initial reports following the attack stated that four attackers were killed and security forces were unharmed. Officials later confirmed the deaths of seven soldiers. Pakistani officials have stated that security forces have killed 88 Khawarij in the past two days. The term Khawarij is used by the Pakistani military and government to refer to fighters from groups like the TTP, which has been designated a terrorist organization by Pakistan.
The encounter in Mir Ali comes as the Pakistani military launches operations against insurgent groups in North Waziristan, South Waziristan, and Bannu districts. Pakistan's KP and Balochistan have seen a surge in attacks on security forces in recent months. The attacks escalated after the Pakistani government's ceasefire with the TTP broke down in 2022. The TTP has specifically targeted police, law enforcement personnel, and security forces.
